In Canada, surrogacy operates on altruistic principles, catering to individuals who have encountered challenges or require support in forming a family. The surrogate journey experience depends on shared trust, communication and respect for the surrogate and future parents. Personal and emotional, the surrogate journey should be a very rewarding experience for Surrogate Angel moms and is often the only option for an infertile couple, 2SLGBTQIA+, or single person to have children.

Surrogacy Information
Surrogacy is a process whereby a Surrogate Angel mom agrees to carry and deliver a child for a couple or individual. Surrogacy is legal in Canada and altruistic, which only allows for the reimbursement of expenses.
Surrogate angels are impregnated through the use of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). A legal contract is required for future parents and their surrogate angel before the journey begins.
Reimbursments for Surrogate Angels
In Canada under the Assisted Human Reproduction Act surrogates cannot be paid a service fee, profits, earnings, or compensated for carrying a baby. Surrogacy in Canada must be altruistic and cannot be a business or commercialized.
Surrogates are reimbursed for expenses incurred during the journey. A Surrogate Angel shall never be out of pocket during the journey.
The Assisted Human Reproduction Act of Canada has not outlined in exact detail what is considered an expense or reimbursement, only that it must be related to the surrogacy journey.
If a Surrogate Angel is financially out of pocket for any reasonable expense related to the surrogacy process, it is considered an expense. A surrogate should never be out of pocket.
Reimbursement amounts for surrogates in Ontario, Canada ranges from $35,000 to $50,000.
Surrogates could also receive Canada Employment Insurance (EI) if they meet certain requirements.
Any questions about expenses/reimbursements will be covered with your legal counsel and outlined in the legal contract before your surrogate journey begins.
Surrogate pregnancy and post partum reimbursements are generally paid monthly or as outlined in your legal surrogacy agreement with the future Parents (and generally over a 10 month period). Surrogates must provide documents and receipts for reimbursements. Post partum out of pocket cost/expenses are typically reimbursed for up to 4-10 weeks post partum. Surrogate Pre-Pregnancy reimbursements are generally made as incurred. In some cases, the future parent will pay the expense directly.
Reimbursements could include the following
Lost salaries, wages, earnings; incurred for medical and related appointments.
Childcare; as incurred for medical and related appointments.
Medications, Pregnancy Tests, Vitamins, Medical Testing; IVF cycle medications, syringes, pregnancy tests, vitamins, bloodwork, ultrasounds are all reimbursed. In many cased the future parents will pay directly to the service providers.
Telephone and Internet; A portion of a surrogate’s monthly phone and internet may be covered due to the cost of calling for appointments with the clinic and physicians.
Massage, acupuncture, dental, chiropractor and the prenatal services for any pregnancy related discomfort or complications.
Bedrest; if complications arise and a surrogate must go on bedrest, as recommended by a doctor, future parents reimburse for certain incremental costs such as housekeeping, childcare and meal preparation.
Snow removal cost, lawn mowing, maternity clothing, pregnancy supplies, feminine hygiene and other related expenses.
Breastmilk; for breast pump purchase or rental, milk storage bags and cost of shipping breast milk.
Life insurance, will, legal contract; expenses to cover the cost of a life insurance policy, will and legal expenses will be covered by the future parents.
Travel cost, trains, planes, automobile, mileage for use of car, parking fees, meals, hotel accommodation; incurred for clinic visits and doctor appointments such as bloodwork, ultrasounds, embryo transfer.
Groceries; a portion of a surrogate’s monthly groceries is allowed.
